College Overview
UConn Avery Point, located on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Thames River in Groton, is a center of excellence for marine and maritime studies and delivers an outstanding education in more traditional areas of study. The Avery Point campus is home to the Connecticut Sea Grant College Program, Project Oceanology, the National Undersea Research Center, and the Long Island Sound Resource Center. The campus offers majors in American Studies, English, General Studies, Maritime Studies, and Marine Sciences. In addition, students who are interested in nearly every other major offered at UConn can complete one or two years of study at the Avery Point campus before moving to Storrs

- Culture/city/location: Students can enjoy the beachfront location during many water-oriented programs, such as sailing. UConn Avery Point has an active student government organization that organize numerous activities and entertainment for students on and off campus.
Features
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion).
If you have earned a degree in certain science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, you may be eligible for a 24-month extension of your post-completion OPT employment authorization.
Cooperative education (or co-operative education) and internships are methods of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience. A cooperative education experience ("co-op"), provides academic credit for structured job experience. Co-ops are full-time, paid or unpaid positions. Internships may be full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid positions.
